    Switzer e900 Makes 900 hp on e85

    When Nissan introduced the latest R35 version of its GTR in 2008, the international press was quick to nickname the car “Godzilla” - as much for the car’s size as for its fire-breathing performance - and Nissan was equally quick to call the car both “perfect” and “untunable”. That “perfect” label is a matter of opinion, of course, but enough GTR buyers felt the car lacked sufficient oomph that a number of tuning firms began to lay waste to the idea of an “untunable” car, building massively-powerful GTR Nissans along the way. One such firm is Tym Switzer’s Ohio-based Switzer Performance, and their massively-powerful GTR is called the P800 - a comprehensively tuned 800 hp track-weapon that’s as much at home on Main Street as it is on the back straight.

    Of course, there are some enthusiasts who will always want more - and when one of these enthusiasts contacted Switzer about pushing the P800 GTR to the limit, the crew at Switzer Performance got to work developing the car you see here.





    806 WHP ON THIS RUN


    “The P800 is already at the limit of what we feel comfortable for the stock GTR transmission,” explains Switzer. “So to go further we really needed to beef up the transmission. We contacted Dodson Motorsports in New Zealand and explained what our goals were with the car - 900 hp, more clutch area, ad smooth shifting at every speed. The new transmission is the product of several months’ co-development between Switzer and Dodson, and is exactly what we needed in order to start pushing the GTR forward beyond 800 hp.”

    The next thing Switzer needed to address to keep “pushing the GTR forward” was fuel. “We didn’t want to just deliver a race-gas package that tethered the client to a fuel drum in his garage, but we wanted to be able to turn up the boost, also.” The solution? Readily-available E85.

    “In a way, the solution was all around us,” offers Switzer, whose shop is located deep in Ohio’s farm country, surrounded - literally! - by cornfields. “E85 isn’t without its trade-offs. We had to modify the fuel system to handle the fuel and significantly increase the size of the injectors, also, but in the end we had a fuel that gave us everything we needed to crank up the boost on this car and deliver over 900 hp.” The E85 delivered other benefits as well: it is significantly “greener” than the pump-gas and race-gas versions of the GTR. “With most high-horsepower cars, you can barely breathe after just a few dyno runs. With the E85, we were able to run pull after pull to dial in the tune without feeling any effects of the usual emissions. It’s hardly scientific, but there was a noticeable improvement in the air quality in the shop compared to race gas.”

    The final product - dubbed the E900 for “Ethanol fuel, 900 hp” - is a fast, capable package that offers linear power delivery and massive midrange torque with superior transient response compared to larger-turbo/race-fuel combinations, while maintaining a bit of environmental responsibility along with its blistering sub-6-second 60-130 mph acceleration.

    New P800 997.1 Turbo PKG for 2010

    Porsche developed their variable-vane "VTG" turbo technology to spool more quickly than conventional turbochargers, making their latest 997 Turbo models respond more like the naturally-aspirated V8 and V12 competition from Ferrari, Aston Martin, and others.

    "When I first saw the new variable-vane technology the 997 Turbos, I was impressed,” explains Tym Switzer. “The more I looked at the VTGs, though, when we flow-tested them and really started putting them to work, I began to realize that it would feasible to develop a turbocharger package that could match the VTG's responsiveness while out-performing them in the midrange and top end. That we were able to develop this package so quickly is a direct result of the incredible progress in aftermarket turbo technology that has taken place over the last few years. Our technology partners can deliver exactly the turbos we need to achieve the performance targets we specify for a given build - and we work together closely to achieve those targets with more run-after-run consistency than a factory VTG-based turbo can provide."

    If Tym's name seems familiar, it's because Switzer Performance (the Ohio-based tuning firm that carries his name) has been making big waves in the tuning industry since their clients in Russia, the MidEast, and other world markets began posting videos of their match races all over YouTube last summer.

    "We know a bit about making real-world power," adds Tym, "and once we decided to go beyond 700 hp with the efficiencies required for maximum consistency, reliability, and throttle-response, we realized it was time to move away from the VTGs, which are on the living edge at 750 and well beyond their practical, everyday limits."

    Common internet wisdom holds that turbocharged engines are exercises in compromise. You can have quick-spooling turbos, and you can have turbos that pull hard to redline, but not both. Switzer's views on the matter? "While incredibly responsive, the VTGs do suffer from some weaknesses when the performance bar is raised significantly." Pointing to torque and horsepower curves that match the factory VTGs in initial spool up, then run away from the VTGs all the way to the P800's new 7500 rpm redline. “With the new P800, you can really have the cake and eat it, too, in a car that you can drive back and forth to the office without drama, and it will still deliver an incredible rush at the track.”

    Switzer's new P800 package for the 997 includes Switzer's competition-style exhaust and headers, electronic boost control, Switzer-specific TiAL Alpha turbochargers, MONSTER intercoolers, and an ECU software tune to bring it all together in a package that drives like a stock 997 TT … until the go-pedal hits the floor, that is. ">The great thing about this package is that the power delivery is more linear than with the VTGs, so the P800 car is actually smoother than the factory TT, without any of the oscillation you get periodically from the DME's dynamic control of the vane mechanism on the VTG,” explains Tym. “This is a great example of our tuning philosophy: we're not about peak power, we're about best power."

    Revisiting the Past | Switzer P800 for 996 TT


    WHAT 800 EMISSIONS-COMPLIANT HP LOOKS LIKE


    Porsche's 996 model was, arguably, the most significant product launch in the company's history, making the flagship 911 a modern car, instead of an air-cooled anachronism.

    The 996 was initially shunned by many Porsche purists, but quickly became a favorite tuning platform for tuners. As we mentioned before in these pages, the 996 featured an engine derived from Porsche's cost-no-object GT1 program, which was shelved at the end of the 1990's, and the engine's bullet-proof construction has allowed us to push the stock internals of the 996's successor - the 997 - to incredible power levels, far beyond what was possible with the older air-cooled cars.

    A robust platform is just one part of the puzzle, however - rapid advancements in both machining, software, and rapid-prototyping technologies is another, and development partners like TiAL Sport have made the most of these new tools, providing us with state-of-the-art turbine housings that manage airflow and heat more efficiently than even the most advanced racing turbos of just a few years ago ... which got us thinking.

    Our primary focus has been on the newer 997 model Porsches (more on those, later), but what if we revisited that platform with current knowledge, using a new turbo based on TiAL's latest Alpha housings (plus a few Switzer tweaks to optimize it for the 996 TT)? What would that car be like?

    Switzer Digitial Lowering Module




    Switzer Performance has just released a new, next-generation digital lowering module for Cayenne models equipped with Porsche's Adaptive air suspension that offers a number of innovative new features and benefits not not available on other modules:

    * easy, no cutting/no splicing installation (totally reversible!)
    * impact-resistant shell is durable and 100% waterproof
    * USB connectivity (for PC) for millimeter precision
    * save multiple settings (ex: street/strip/track)

    Best known for its mega-horsepower project cars and 800+ hp tuning programs for Porsche 911 Turbos, Switzer didn't simply re-brand existing technology - this is an all-new lowering module,” explains Tym Switzer. “Like all of our products, we wanted to come to market with something that raises the game, and not just re-invent the wheel.     Adjusting the ride height with Switzer's lowering module is easy as well, with an intuitive interface that allows users to raise and lower each wheel individually for a custom “rake”, or all at once to quickly “slam” the car to a ride height over 50 mm lower than the lowest stock setting.     Exploring The Limits




    Porsche's 911 Turbo engines have been attracting high-performance tuners for decades, each one pushing the limits of engine performance further and further into the high-horsepower stratosphere. In the past, elite tuning firms like Ruf and TechArt were forced to replace dozens of internal engine components with bespoke, strengthened parts to handle the loads that 600+ horsepower put on them. All that changed, however, with the introduction of the 997 model Porsche Turbos in 2006.

    “The 997 engine is really an incredible piece of engineering,” says Tym Switzer, who has spent the last few years exploring the limits of the 997 Turbo engine, inside and out. “When we set out to develop more horsepower with the 997 Porsche, we approached it the same way we approach any new platform: we analyze the factory components and the way they were designed to handles stress loads to establish an upper limit of what the engine is capable of. When I first looked into the 997 engine, I was very impressed with the quality of the entire assembly.”

    What Switzer saw in the 997's engine was the result a no-holds-barred engineering program that culminated in Porsche's 964/GT1 racecar – a turbocharged monster that developed staggering horsepower with enough ruggedness and reliability built in to stand up to the punishing abuse of 24-hour endurance racing. As such, the 997 Turbo engine ships from the factory with many of the components necessary for making big horsepower already in place. “It's like they took a checklist from the page of every tuner out there that was rebuilding these engines, and decided to just put all that stuff in at the factory. Forged connecting rods? Check. Reinforced crankshaft? Check. Dry-sump oil system? Check. It's all there. In fact, just about every component in the 997 was over-built. Inside, it looks more like one of the cutting edge import race engines we were building in the 90's than it did any kind of street engine.”

    With a high degree of confidence in the 997 Turbo engine's internals, Switzer moved to develop a line of bolt-on power-builders that would take advantage of the car's strengths, while addressing some of the limiting factors. “The turbos and intercoolers had to be upgraded to produce the the airflow and efficiencies we needed to reach our objectives. That was a given. Working with our technology partners, we were able to come to market with new upgrade turbo solutions. We also worked diligently to develop our own 'MONSTER' intercoolers and intake plumbing. I think our overall upgrade strategy compliments the overbuilt nature of the 997 perfectly.”

    Switzer's tuning program eventually led to the firm's L4 PKG, which delivers over 700 horsepower on 93 octane gasoline with upgraded versions of Porsche's excellent factory VTG turbos – all while remaining emissions compliant. “You could never do something like this ten years ago on stock internals,” he explains. “The older air-cooled Porsche engines just couldn't handle that kind of power without a fully substantially reinforced engine.”

    Eventually, though, Switzer's customers wanted more than 700 or 800 hp. “Too much is never enough for some clients,” offers Tym, “so in order to develop a solid engine program for these more ambitious projects, it was essential to see just how much power some of these stock components could stand up to, when tuned properly. We then spoke to a few of our more adventurous clients and decided to see exactly where the limits of the 997 really are.”

    Last fall, Switzer and his crew reached 850 all-wheel horsepower (approx. 1000 crank hp) with their SLEDGEHAMMER project car. That prodigious power output and the car's standard all-wheel-drive traction delivered enough performance for repeated 9.7-second quarter-mile runs at over 145 mph with 60-130 times in the 4's – performance that falls well into “Superbike” territory.

    This week, one year on, Switzer's SLEDGEHAMMER is still pulling strong, serving as the company's 997 development mule and astonishing everyone with its engine's longevity and durability. “Everyone who has been in this industry for a number of years is surprised by these cars,” says Tym. “Really, though, there's no surprises here. When we reached 700 hp a year and a half ago, we were told the engines were time-bombs. Dozens of customer cars and literally thousands of road - and track! - miles later, the cars are still running strong. The P800 kit we introduced earlier this year proved that the limit wasn't anywhere near 700 hp, and earlier this week, the original SLEDGEHAMMER came back to the shop and did back-to-back dyno pulls at 915 horsepower with nearly 800 lb-ft of torque. We've made some minor updates to the fuel system and standalone engine management system, but that's still 50 hp and almost 100 lb-ft more than the car's best numbers a year ago, and it's still holding together. As expected. I think, more than anything, these huge power levels serve to show just how good the Porsche 997 Turbo is from the factory. As a tuner, you couldn't ask for a better, stronger foundation. The real challenge has been to make the most of what's already there.”





    So, what's next for the 997-engined SLEDGEHAMMER? A good deal more abuse! “We're going to run a few more experiments with this development car. There are still a few questions I have that I would like to answer for future product development. There is still an enormous amount of potential in the 997, and we're all curious to see how far this particular rabbit holes goes!”

    Getting Closer: 10.4 sec. 1/4 mile





    A few weeks ago, some other shops started posting 10.4 sec. 1/4 mile runs and 134 mph trap speeds and claiming GTR "records" at sanctioned tracks.

    We've never claimed our GTR tuning packages would be record-breakers, and we certainly haven't set them up to be drag-racers (in fact, we developed the GTR PKG specifically as a road-course trackday PKG!) but that doesn't mean our 800 hp pump-gas car P800 GTR Nissan can't get down the road ... witness the runs above, consistent 10.4xx second runs at 132-133 mph.

    I know, I know: these runs are not on a track, not sanctioned, etc. They're also not too far off that record, considering this is an off-the-shelf package that's been proven in 20-odd customer cars around the world, either!

    The Beauty of All-Wheel-Drive




    When Tym Switzer and his crew at Ohio-based Switzer Performance introduced their 800 hp P800 package for Porsche's track-focused GT2 back in June, a number of inquiries expressed significant interest in the package, but the GT2 was raw and fast, and a number of customers asked if they could get the same level of power from the more controllable AWD 997TT.

    Switzer's answer was a resounding "Yes!", which brings us to the car pictured here - an 800 hp, all-wheel drive "Yes!" that takes advantage of the 997's superior traction and shorter gearing to deliver staggering acceleration figures. Think sub 3-second 0-60 runs and 1/4 mile times consistently under 10.5, and you start to get the idea: this car is a monster.

    "The P800 kit for the GT2 evolved from the SLEDGEHAMMER project car that ran in the 9's last year," offers Tym, "that was a race-gas package, but as the program developed, we were able to move to a more streetable package and keep the factory DME, unlike the SLEDGEHAMMER, which used a stand-alone system. Other than that, everything that made the SLEDGEHAMMER so special is still right there in the P800 GT2, and it's still right there in this 997."





    Switzer's P800 997 package apes their GT2 package's use of custom GT30 turbochargers with custom billet compressor wheels on ball-bearing center sections in lightweight stainless housings, the heat generated by the turbocharged six is still dissipated by Switzer's own MONSTER intercoolers, and Switzer's own DME calibrations still keep everything copacetic. Unlike the GT2, however, the 997TT-based P800 does not require a new intake manifold or upgraded throttle-body. Switzer explains, "Porsche developed a model-specific intake manifold for the GT2, which worked perfectly with the stock VTGs, but didn't flow enough for the GT30Rs. The 997TT just doesn't have that problem, which is great because it's easier to install, and saves the customer some money, too."





    Switzer's 800 hp P800 package for the 997TT includes Switzer's competition-style exhaust and headers, an upgraded carbon clutch package, electronic boost control, and the previously mentioned GT30R turbos, MONSTER intercoolers, and ECU software.

    Growing Pains (sha la la la)



    The Switzer blog and forum accounts have been pretty quiet recently, and I'm sure many of you have been wondering about what we've been up to "behind the scenes". So what, exactly, have we been up to?

    The short answer is "We've been working 12-15 hour days, every day, for the last 2 months."

    The less-short answer is that ever since Sharif at Forged Performance approached us about becoming a Switzer installer, we've been making detail changes to our GTR packages to make them more installer-friendly. This is quite a lot easier said than done!

    See, here at Switzer, we've always done the majority of our own installs, so if we needed a mounting bracket to be done a certain way, we made it. If we needed an extra washer here or a different bolt-length there, we walked across the shop and pulled it from a drawer. There were no installation manuals, either - we simply remembered what we did the last time, or just referred to a shop notebook for the tricky bits.

    As you can imagine, this not The Way To Do Things when you are trying to ship a "ready-to-install" package halfway across the country or across the world; which is exactly what we are trying to do!

    Today, we find ourselves growing - and growing fast!

    Over the past few months, we've been transforming Switzer Performance from a small, custom tuning shop to a (less small?) manufacturer of bolt-on performance packages based on the "built-to-order" products we've delivered to our clients so far. These packages need to be designed around a single fact: that our dealers may have knowledgeable, experienced technicians to do their installs, but if he doesn't see things exactly the way we do, the pieces we send start to blend together; and where we see a kit, he sees a puzzle!

    So, Tym and the rest of the crew downstairs got to work, trying to anticipate - and duplicate! - any hiccup or misstep that a shop may come across. At the same time, they looked at each and every component in the original "in-house" package, and asked how it could be improved, changed, and tweaked to make installations go more smoothly ...

    ... the results are some of the new parts you see below, which include new lines for the turbos, new blow-off-valves, machined MAF housings for the intakes, updated actuators, and custom silicone hose kits. Less obvious changes include a simpler order-of-operations, a new, more complete hardware kit, and a major (for us!) financial commitment to have our Switzer modified turbos and MONSTER intercoolers ON THE SHELF AND READY TO GO, eliminating a 10-15 day wait to get the stock cores machined out.

    Along the way, we've been able to make a few improvements as well. The new lines are more efficient. The new intakes provide better flow. The new cooling package that drastically reduces engine and trans. temperatures on the street and the track.

    Did I forget to mention the new cooling package?

    Simply put, Nissan's R35 GTR is still new to the marketplace and very new to every tuner. Many of you have been following us along our Nissan tuning path since the beginning, and followed Derek Whitis' Freedom Autosport GTR throughout the 2009 OneLap of America, where the car experienced a number of issues and frequently went into "limp-mode", leading Whitis' team to call it quits about halfway through the event. It was a heart-breaker for all of us, and we found ourselves with lots of questions, lots of theories, and not a whole lot of answers.

    Another thing we had lots of, however, was data.

    For data to become useful information, it needs careful analysis and a complete understanding of the systems involved. Through additional testing and comparisons between tuned cars (thanks, JR!), stock cars (thanks, Doug!), and the Freedom Autosport car (thanks, Derek!) we were able to isolate many of the issues that gave the car problems. Some of these issues were simple (low coolant), some were simply unexpected (caused by changes to the front and rear outside tire diameters), and some were truly bizarre (I don't even want to TALK about front splitters anymore!).

    All of this research, development, testing, verification, and implementation takes time. Sometimes the process takes longer than you anticipate, but we firmly believe that a dedicated R&D program driven by the scientific method will beat "looking under the hood and thinking as hard as you can" any day.

    The fruits of this research and 1000 miles of logged track-data from our customers is what led to the detail improvements mentioned above being integrated into our "mass-production" packages, and the development of our all-new cooling package, which we've bundled with our updated P700/800 packages. The new cooling package, in concert with the rest of the updates mentioned above, doesn't take away from the smooth drive-ability of our kits - it simply makes the day to day driving experience that much more like a stock car ...

    ... it also lets us push the cars Harder where it counts: on the track.

    The Switzer P700/800 GTR Nissans have always been powerful street cars that were capable of impressing even the toughest critics at the track. With these new updates, we've been able to create a more bulletproof product that makes the P700/800 into a dominant track day weapon that is every bit as smooth and tractable as the stock R35.

    We'll have a full update and product/pricing release on the updated P700/800 packages later this week, as well as a new "R" PKG that will be ready before you know it.

    GT2 Porsche Tuning PKGs up to 800 HP




    2009 has been a busy year for us here at Switzer Performance. In January, our thousand-horsepower, 9-second SLEDGEHAMMER project car introduced the world to Tym's Oberlin, Ohio-based tuning house, and we followed up that debut act in February when a number of our customer cars ran 10 second 1/4 miles in 700 hp fully-automatic 997 turbo Porsches. March saw the introduction of our Nissan R35 GTR performance upgrades, good for up to 800 hp on 93 octane pump gas.

    This week, Tym Switzer is introducing his latest customer-ready performance packages for Porsche's outstanding 997 GT2. The new GT2 packages range from a simple software revision to Switzer's comprehensive flagship offering: the $39,000, 800 hp GT2 PKG shown (installed) in these pictures. "This 800 horsepower pump-gas package has evolved from those first SLEDGEHAMMER builds," explains Tym, "but unlike the SLEDGEHAMMER, which used a stand-alone system, we've been able to keep the factory DME, making this a true bolt-on package. Everything else that went into the SLEDGEHAMMER builds is in this package, running on pump 93."





    Switzer's 800 hp GT2 package makes use of custom Garret GT30R-based turbochargers with custom billet compressor wheels on ball-bearing center sections in lightweight stainless turbine housings. Switzer's upgraded turbos compress massive amounts of air, while generating heat than the stock units - heat which is channeled to the engine through Switzer's own MONSTER intercoolers. The engine itself is fed air and fuel through larger injectors and a custom intake plenum with an oversized throttle-body. All this hardware is managed by the stock ECU, running Switzer-specific DME software calibrations. Perhaps the most controversial part of Switzer's package, however, is the exhaust system. Switzer's GT2 exhales through a GT2-specific version of the company's existing 997 TT exhaust. "As much as we would have liked to stick with the GT2's titanium canister, there was just no way to hit our power goal on pump gas with the stock system. It was just too restrictive and not designed to handle this much airflow."







    Switzer's stated goal for the GT2 project was 800 crank horsepower on 93 octane pump gas with an efficient, linear power curve that efficiently put power to the ground and didn't punish the driver with sudden spikes in torque and power. One look at the final dyno results (see video, above - about a minute in) reveals those goals have been met. "We were very happy to hit our target numbers, of course, but the best part is that the car is still so manageable on the street, at this power level. It is an everyday hyper-performing exotic, and I can't wait to get it out on the track and see how it performs in the hands of a really talented driver."
