1/4 mile MPH Record Falls to R1K

9.38 SEC., 156.44 MPH

Tym Switzer's R1K GTR Prototype rocketed across the quarter-mile in just 9.38 seconds on its way to setting a 1/4 mile speed record of 156.44 mph last weekend at NHRA-sanctioned Summit Dragway in Norwalk, Ohio.

Watch the video, below, for more.

WELCOME TO THE 9 SEC. CLUB

Despite having more than 1000 awhp on tap on C16 racing fuel from VP, Switzer's missile remains flexible enough to be driven on public roads, in keeping with Tym's stated goals of building a GTR that - like the company's P800 Porsches - is flexible enough to be driven every day, without asking the driver to sacrifice reliability or smoothness, even in stop-and-go traffic.

Congrats to the team, the car's owner, and to Tym, who summed up the achievement in his usual, humble style: "we spun all through 1st and 2nd, so there's still a couple tenths in there."

Switzer and the R1K will be hitting the track again soon ... expect more records to fall when they do.

R911S and P800 GTR on Autoblog

Autoblog has been sending some big love our way this week, with not one but two big posts about Tym's latest twin-turbo terrors.

First, Switzer's latest R911S GT2 was released, with a power-to-weight ratio that simply "eviscerates" Porsche latest GT2 RS. You can check out Autoblog's post (with photo gallery) and our release if you like, but the short story is this: substantially more GO.

A few days later, the crew at Autoblog posted the following video from our Swedish dealer Advan Performance, who ran their P800 GTR Nissan shop car against an equally powerful Koenigsegg CCR which had been effectively dispatching all challengers before lining up to the Advan car.

What happened next?

THE GTR SHOWS OFF ITS MAGIC DIFF

As you can see, the CCR had little hope of catching the Switzer car from a 30 mph roll, and only a roll from about 60 overcame the Nissan's magic traction advantages. It seems that, from a stop, the GTR is a class or two ahead of the Koenigsegg CCR ... which puts the car in some pretty rare company.

This is What 800 AWHP Sounds Like

CHECK OUT THAT 4-5 SHIFT AT THE END

Last week, the crew at Switzer Performance went down to David Buschur's Mustang Dyno to put some new development turbos through their paces.

The result?

806 HP | 723 TQ

That's right: a staggering eight-hundred-and-six wheel horsepower. Even assuming a hugely conservative 10% driveline loss, that's OVER 895 HP at the crank!

We'll have full details and more technical info. coming soon - stay tuned!

Switzer P800 Runs 10.19 1/4

We just can't love our customers enough - hot on the heels of one customer running back-to-back mile runs at over 190 mph in the hot and humid Florida "air", we have another customer making waves in the 1/4 mile: running a blistering 10.19!

Great job, Oleg!

Miami Mile

This past weekend's Milemarker-1 event in Miami was supposed to be little more than a fact-finding mission for us. We were going down to log one of our customers' P800 GTR Nissans in extreme heat, and see what we could see. It was a bit last-minute, but we went into the event without expectation, and with more than a little curiosity.

This was the running of this event, and the organizers seemed to spend half the morning in the weeds - both literally and figuratively - trying to sort out starting orders, clear the track, etc.

As the people shuffled around, the temperatures kept climbing. One gentleman near us shot the track surface with an IR gun. 140 degrees. We suffered through the heat, plugged in the data loggers, and drove down the track to our vantage point, waiting for the GTR to come by.

This is what we saw.

Unbelievable!

The Switzer P800 GTR blasted through the "official" speed trap at over 189 mph on its first run. A few software tweaks later saw a GPS-indicated 196 mph on the car's 3rd run!

"This is exactly what we needed to see," said Tym, after I'd finished jumping up and down and screaming at the car's 191 run. "The car isn't even getting over 220, and by the time it's back in staging it's already in the 180s. This is exactly what we needed to see. There is no question that the cooling upgrades are doing their job."

Run after run, launch after launch, the car stayed cool and collected - and the speeds stayed consistently in the 190's.

"There are guys out here like Bello that run around 230 at these events," explained Tym. "They're running 210-215 here, so 196? I'm pretty happy with the way the car is running today, definitely."

We have a full gallery of event pictures on our Flickr page for you to enjoy.

For more pictures and videos of Switzer's cars running in mile events, read our Moscow Unlimited post, or check out one of our SLEDGEHAMMER articles from Autoblog.

Milemarker organizers claim they'll be holding another mile event in January at the same venue.

Miami in January? Sounds better than Ohio!

See you there ...

Switzer R850 GTR Nissan

Tym's turned this shop into something of a breeding-ground for pump-gas monsters this year, with the 800 hp P800 GTRs - making over 300 more hp than their OE Nissan brethren - being some of the quickest of the bunch.

Of course, more is expected in this business and too much is never enough, so as soon as Switzer's customers got their hands on the cars, they started asking for more power still.

"How much will it make on race gas? That was the first question, right out of the box," explains Tym. "We've developed the 'P' packages as daily-use products that wouldn't force you to buy race gas or excessively strain the driveline. We wanted to make an 800 hp car that was a true daily driver, and we accomplished that ... but someone always wants more. We've bent a bit to the demands of those customers that are using their GTRs primarily as trackday cars, and developed a new 'R' package specifically for them."

The "R", in this case, refers to race fuel - as the "P" in "P800" referred to the fact that the package was developed for "pump gas" - and with better fuel comes, of course, more boost, and more power. "We're seeing consistent dyno results in excess of 740 all-wheel-horsepower and 715 lb-ft, pull after pull. Most everyone seems to agree that the GTR has about a 15% driveline loss. Based on that, this kit is making well over 850 hp and 820 lb-ft at the crank."

As with all of Switzer's GTR packages, this kit builds power very similarly to the stock R35, before the boost really begins to kick in above 3500 rpm. "This helps preserve the trans. in the car, but it's right on the edge. The P800 is still the ultimate everyday car. This car, tuned like this, is something else."

Scary stuff. Dyno video, below.

Pricing for the new R850 PKG from Switzer is set at $20990, which includes pump gas and race fuel tunes, as well as Switzer's updated cooling PKG, and features a massive dual-core radiator, thermostat, and revised Switzer MONSTER intercoolers.

Anticipation ...

A few weeks ago, we took writer Jack Baruth and photographer Dustin Woods out to Nelson Ledges with a pair of 800 hp pump-gas track terrors: our P800 GTR Nissan and P800 GT2 Porsche.

On our Dyno-Jet dyno, these cars consistently put out within 5 whp of each other, and both are VERY quick, but these two cars couldn't be more different in execution. This is digital v. analog at its finest ... with Jack weighing in on Speed:Sport:Life already, we can't wait to read Dustin's review next month!

Special thanks to David and JR, and - of course! - the Lanes down at Nelson Ledges.

Enjoy the teasers, much more to come!

Freedom Autosport/Switzer GTR v. OneLap

On May 1st, Derek Whitis' Freedom Autosport team – featuring veteran Grand Am Rolex driver Tom Long – will set out from their Florida home with just one goal in mind: to bring home the 2009 TireRack Cannonball One Lap of America (presented by Motor Trend) winner's trophy.

For 2009, Freedom Autosport will be campaigning a heavily modified Nissan R35 GTR, which has been tuned by Tym Switzer's Ohio-based tuning house to deliver more than 700 horsepower and 600 lb-ft of torque to the Nissan's tires - on 93 octane pump gas! In Whitis' own words, "the GTR is a phenomenal car in stock form, but the guys at Switzer were able to turn a 500 lb gorilla into a 1000 lb King Kong in a way that makes this car faster, more linear, and easier to drive than anything I've ever experienced."

Tom Long seconds Whitis' initial impressions, adding that “the capability Switzer added to our GTR is incredible. They took a well engineered car, with world-class performance, and stepped it up to the next level. The smooth power delivery provided by a linear torque curve enables me to apply throttle all the way through the corner with absolute control ... amazing!”

That added power – from Nissan's stock 480 hp to over 800 at the crank – comes courtesy of Switzer's P800 performance package that adds upgraded turbochargers, custom intake assemblies, 900cc injectors, a pair of Switzer's MONSTER intercoolers, and Switzer's custom software calibration, and exits through a unique Freedom Autosport-developed lightweight exhaust system.

All that added power is only one aspect of Freedom Autosport's total package, however. The signal-green GTR makes extensive use MIT-developed of active-aero components from AeroMotions, as well lightweight carbon body panels from Password:JDM, while components from Performance Friction & Motorsport Brake Specialists, Stillen, GT-RR.com, Forged Performance, Kraft Nissan of Tallahassee, NAGTROC.com, WillAll Racing, and JRZ suspension help the car stop better and turn nearly as hard as it accelerates.

“We're really looking forward to running the OneLap this year,” explains Whitis"Our team name and charity, the Wounded Support Fund, is all about giving a little thanks to the men and women who've been protecting us for the last 230 years. Freedom Autosport runs the US Marine Corps. insignia on all its cars in honor of my brother-in-law, Major Tim Anderson, but also in honor of all the soldiers who are out there risking their lives so we can be free to run events like these at home. We have veterans on our team, there are veterans on our sponsors' payroll, and there are veterans to be counted among the seasoned Lap Dogs we'll be running with this year.”

The 2009 running of the TireRack Cannonball OneLap of America (presented by Motor Trend) kicks off May 1st at TireRack headquarters in South Bend, Indiana and wraps up 8 days and 3200 mile later, again in South Bend. Will the Freedom Autosport/Switzer GTR break Porsche's string of six consecutive OneLap victories and bring home the gold? We'll find out soon enough.

Seven-hundred and Seven to the Wheels

Hello, all.

I wanted to post this 707 awhp dyno-pull video here before putting it anywere else (a little reward to the blog readers).

Enjoy!
